Project Description
Vital Systems Engineering delivered the Elpitiya Smart Village Project in Sri Lanka, a rural innovation case study that combines solar power, smart sensing and reliable communications for communities living in remote jungle terrain. The solution improves disaster readiness, environmental monitoring and agriculture in the Galle District.
Standalone renewable power systems were built for three locations Riverside, North Repeater and South Repeater where grid supply is not available. Each site uses solar PV arrays, MPPT charge controllers and lead acid batteries with a custom DC buck converter that ensures stable voltage for radios and controllers.
Smart environmental monitoring captures real time weather data including temperature and humidity that supports tea processing, plus river water level monitoring for early flood alerts. The sites include emergency sirens, amplifiers and microphone units to broadcast public warnings.
Earthing and surge protection was engineered for every location with Surge Protection Devices. At the mountaintop site the team installed a pure copper rod earthing system to address high elevation grounding challenges.
Mechanical fabrication included custom steel structures for solar panels and antennas designed for rugged terrain.
Result This Sri Lanka project shows how renewable energy and sensing can raise resilience and productivity for rural communities. Despite rain, difficult access and logistics, the team completed a robust, maintainable system backed by clear documentation.
